World Health Day 2015
The World Health day is celebrated every year on April 7.
It was established by the
World Health Organization
(WHO), first in 1948, to raise
awareness on key global
health issues.
Each year a theme is selected
to highlight the priority area in
public health, this year, the focus is on food safety.
The changes in food production, distribution and consumption, new methods of
packaging have raised new
threats to food safety. An esti-
mated 2 million people die
every year due to unsafe
food. Food safety aims to
protect consumers from the
risk of food poisoning.
In order to reduce these incidents, we
need
to
strengthen the food safety
measures. Food safety is a
collective effort. Everyone
needs to work together including the farmers, manufactures, vendors and consumers. In this context,
WHO offers five keys for
safer food, which includeskeeping the food clean,
separating the raw and

cooked food, cooking the food thoroughly, keeping the food at appropriate temperature and making sure to
use safe water and suitable raw materials.
The need for food safety has become
apparent in every country, as food
supply now remains more globalized.
Therefore, WHO is making a vital effort to promote food safety.
