enthusiasm from each house. There were some
amazing performances from members of the
team and newcomers. This led to a close
finish, decided only by the relays, leaving
Trant’s victorious with a total score of 338,
slightly ahead of College. The Victores
Ludorum were Tom Collings (H) for the
senior division, Joel Fernandez (B) and Henry
Chan (A) for the intermediates and Shern Lee
(H) for the juniors. It was an amazing
experience and a wonderful final show for the
senior participants.
Cross Country
This cross country season began with a new
race, the inter-house relays, introduced by the
current captain Thomas O'Callaghan-Brown
(G). The race went excellently with Hopper's
taking the gold by a considerable margin,
Kenny's in second and Toye's in third; there
were even two teams of dons providing high
calibre competition. As a first attempt, the
competition was very successful and will
hopefully continue for years to come. Since
then the cross country team has maintained a
high standard of competition with a dozen
boys competing at the District competition in
Southampton. At this event, three fourth years
came in the top 16 and so qualified for the
Inter-Counties competition in Kent: Thomas
O’Callaghan-Brown (G) (captain), Thomas
Heinzel-Kienberger (D), and Ben Miyano (I) -
a Japanese exchange pupil who has become an
asset to the team. They helped to lead the
Hampshire team to victory in the senior
category. At the same time, an intermediate
and junior team went to Wellington, led by the
junior captain William Fox (D), where they
finished fifth out of fifteen. The last race of the
first half of term was the Radley Relay where
the intermediate and senior teams faced sub-
zero temperatures to come fourth and fifth
respectively out of 32 teams.
Squash
According to our coach Mr Atkinson, this has
been the most competitive and successful year
of squash at Winchester College in recent
times. Not solely down to individual
excellence, but rather due to hard work, strong
team spirit and strength in depth. When the
Sen V team, consisting of Alex Titherington
(E), Dylan Thompson (A), Kevin Cheung (D),
Nicholas Ching (E) and Sean Kim (Coll)
(subs: Miles Jones (A) and Akhil Mithal (F))
has played at full strength, it has been
unbeaten.
This allowed us to conquer the first nationals
tournament of the season in Guildford, beating
Radley College in the final, the school which
had beaten us in the final the year before. Sean
Kim’s (Coll) victory over Radley’s fifth seed
was a crucial win. Mental strength and
determination allowed him to come from
behind to win his match. Nicholas Ching (E)
infuriated his Radley counterpart by also
coming back to win the match, his opponent
shattering his racket in frustration. Akhil
Mithal (F) has also fought back from
seemingly hopeless situations to clinch wins in
the final games. The team has been somewhat
plagued with injuries this year, with Alex
Titherington’s (E) inconsistent physical state
and Kevin Cheung’s (D) ankle problems.
Nevertheless, the Sen V kept on fighting with
the help of our trusty captain and second seed
Dylan Thompson (A) who keeps us
enthusiastic and maintains a friendly and
enjoyable environment at the squash courts.
Yet this would all not have been possible
without the MIC of squash, Dr Ronaldson,
who works hard with Dylan and Mr Atkinson
to keep the courts running, the team working
and the precious wooden floors squeaky clean.
Basketball
Winchester College is enjoying another
successful season in basketball. The seniors
were runners-up in the Wellington
Tournament. Having brushed aside the hosts
and Charterhouse, they fell short to Bradfield
in the final. As for the teams on the circuit,
they beat Charterhouse once more, in one of
the tightest games of the season. They won
their match against Harrow and were
victorious against Sherborne. Unfortunately,
the seniors lost to Bradfield and Eton. They
have made it out of their group in the U19s
National Schools Basketball Competition and
at the time of writing, are battling in the
knock-out stages.
The senior team might lack in numbers, but is
abundant with talent. The point guard and
captain, Tae Uahwatanasakul (E), not only
