Hiroshige. The div had clearly thought carefully about the hang, which was pleasingly harmonious and stimulating in its juxtapositions.
There were two exhibitions in the new Treasury this term. In January there was a selection from the collection of 21 English watercolours and drawings bequeathed to the school by Adam Crick( OW and sometime English don). The bequest included several fine 18 th century watercolours by Francis Place, Thomas Rowlandson and Francis Towne. In the second half of term was an exhibition on the history of the Natural History Society from its origins in 1870 up to the present day. This fascinating exhibition, full of unusual objects such as a warthog skull and a stuffed barnacle goose, was curated by Ethan Chuck( Coll), Tobias Schröder( Coll), and Alex Hanbury-Tenison( Coll), assisted by Nick Baker( Duncan Louis Stewart Fellow) and Mrs Wragg.
The annual Kenneth Clark Prize was this year adjudicated by Gabriele Finaldi, Director of the National Gallery. The seven finalists were Roderick Caperton( G), Alex Butcher( A), TX Finney( A), Max Cheung( Coll), Michael Rossiter( C), Jan Preiss( Coll) and Henry Beaves( I). Caperton gave a detailed account of the architecture of the Maison Carrée in Nimes, enlivened by his personal memories of visits to the building. Finney carefully set out his interpretation of the symbolism of Thomas Cole’ s cycle of paintings The Course of Empire. Rossiter enthused about Antoni Gaudi’ s Casa Batlló, uncovering the richness of the building’ s political and philosophical meanings. Preiss, a visiting pupil from the Czech Republic, spoke about a work by his countryman: Alfonse Mucha’ s The Slav Epic, giving a fluent account of this unfamiliar work. Following a presentation of his own about Bartolomé Bermejo’ s Saint Michael Triumphing over the Devil, Dr Finaldi gave an insightful and appreciative response to each of the seven finalists. The bronze medal was awarded to Henry Beaves for his illuminating and historically-informed presentation on Zhang Xiaogang’ s A Big Family. Silver went to Max
Cheung for an eloquent, original and persuasive analysis of Cezanne’ s Leda and the Swan in its literary and art historical context. The gold medal was won by Alex Butcher who gave a lively and impassioned presentation on Brunelleschi’ s Dome, which explained with impressive clarity the technical problems posed by the dome’ s construction and the ingenuity with which they were resolved.

OTH faced College at Xs on the 7 th of February in the first main fixture of the calendar. The game started slowly with the teams trading behinds but College’ s hot dominated from the first whistle. As the half progressed OTH began to turn the screw, and with good work from their hotmen, they went into half time 18-6 up. OTH’ s upwards trajectory continued after the break, and with two excellent fliers from Louis Cardoe( C) and Sebastian Byers( I), OTH won the game 41- 18. Credit must go to College’ s hot who allowed Henry Adams to pump over numerous behinds. Commoners faced College at Xs after XVs and came out with a win as was expected. Nonetheless, College did not make it easy for them by any means with their sensational hot making life difficult for the boys in red. Commoners ran out 36-22 winners but College again gave a good account of themselves.
The sky that greeted us on the morning of XVs was drab and grey with rain and sleet falling intermittently. The rain halted by lunch but the afternoon remained bitterly cold. This did little to put off the support, and there was the usual crackling atmosphere around College canvas. Roars echoed around Meads as the match began. Commoners’ dominance in the hot began from the first minute and continued until the last. However, strong work from OTH captain Julius Agbaje( C) earnt OTH the first points of the match. However, Commoners then scored sixteen unanswered including the first goal of the game from Commoner captain Kahan Shirvani( K). OTH found themselves pinned back in their own half with Commoners opting for hots in the
