Mr Fitzsimmons joined us this year as the new Head of History, bravely taking on the role of his predecessor JFH with much success.
He read History at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge with a focus on modern political thought, then completed his MA at KCL, which“ in theory, was in teaching, but in reality, was in 19th-century teaching.” He has also taught at St. Paul’ s School and Uppingham, and has now arrived at the College in pursuit of a“ robust classroom” where you can ping ideas around.
On top of enjoying hiking and climbing, Mr Fitzsimmons is on the GB team for target rifle shooting, and will travel to the US and Canada next summer to compete against their national teams. Inspired by his own time in the CCF at school, he was then made captain of the rifle team at Cambridge, and can now shoot out to 1000 yards on a. 308.

This term, we welcomed Mr Bowman as an Economics don and Freddie’ s house tutor.
His introduction to economics came at a young age: growing up in Norfolk, he vividly recalls his grandfather explaining supply and demand at dinner using a chocolate bar analogy that has continued to feature in his lessons. He went on to read PPE, and drawn to political philosophy, wrote his dissertation on a Rawls-inspired“ theory of sporting justice”, exploring how societies might create fairer starting points for individuals of differing natural talents.
Before joining Winchester, Mr Bowman has also taught at Repton School and his own former school in Norwich. Moving to Winchester’ s“ academically ambitious” environment has been energising and he speaks warmly of teaching pupils who“ genuinely want to learn”.
Beyond the classroom, Mr Bowman is an avid long-distance runner and road cyclist, and teases at a possible triathlon team in the future. For the time being, he coaches football and hopes to contribute to both hockey and athletics later in the year.

Mr Norman joined us this term in the Economics Department, primarily teaching microeconomics to VIBk, who speak fondly of his clear and precise teaching style.
Growing up in Kent, Mr Norman took History, Politics and Economics at A-Level before going on to study Economics at the University of Bath. Then, he went into insurance, only to find that aligning cells and formatting Excel spreadsheets was not exactly for him. So, he decided to pursue teaching instead— in his own words a“ much nobler profession”.
Beyond the classroom, Mr Norman is a fan of esoteric holiday destinations and recently visited Turkmenistan. He coaches the U14Bs and is one of the dons in charge of the Ramsey( Economics) Society, having recently delivered a presentation on the EU and its role in the global economy. Mr Norman’ s favourite tradition is that of Notions, and he is particularly fond of Toytime, as, to someone with no knowledge of the language here, it all seems rather anachronistic( but very fun indeed).
