The Wykehamist
Oddly, climbing has not featured in his ekker-contributions; instead, he has run soccer and cricket teams very successfully and mastered the rules of WinCoFo. The last neatly encapsulates his time with us: he takes difficult things on( whether factor mobility
VALE TDF
When TDF joined the College from Reading School 2 years ago, he brought with him an admirable repertoire of skills and experience. An all-rounder of a schoolmaster is a scarce commodity and with the associated demand for his array of talents, it took no time at all for TDF to immerse himself fully into life at the school.
As an Economics Don, pupils have respected him greatly and valued his subject knowledge to the highest level. Jacob O’ Ceallaigh writes that his‘ biggest achievement by a country mile is winning the Keynes Society debate last year against Michael Marcas’ and undoubtedly, anyone who remembers his opponent’ s veracity will appreciate how this defines TDF’ s status and credibility as a fine and knowledgeable teacher. It was no surprise to see Mr Flowerdew step in to become Head of Economics after Mr Marcas’ s departure and he has fulfilled the role with aplomb. Dependable, reliable and organised are not the flashiest of adjectives but are essential for running a department. The foundation provided, allowed TDF to be an astute and admired leader, running a vibrant department, with excellent talks and trips( who knew so many pupils cared so deeply about Heathrow!).
TDF is somebody who is always willing to help and take work off the shoulders of colleagues. Andrew Reeve writes in tribute,‘ he is extremely supportive and has made my start at Winchester extremely easy.’ Real care for others – colleagues & pupils alike – and generosity with his time are themes that permeate through all recollections of TDF’ s
SHJ
SHJ joined Winchester as Dean of Chapel in Cloister Time 2022, and was immediately swept into the heart of school life. On her very first day in the role, she stepped into the cathedral to lead an uplifting and deeply thoughtful Eastertide service: it was a baptism of fire by any standard, and an occasion which she handled with poise and grace.
From the outset, SHJ brought her characteristic energy, intellect, and warmth to every facet of her role. Alongside her or Freddie’ s on a Saturday night), calmly masters them, and effortlessly carries them out. Westminster’ s gain is our loss: he will be sorely missed. We wish him well.

time here. As a Live-Out Don, he receives great plaudits from his tutor group in Hopper’ s and those frequenting Oakshott’ s while he was on duty there, all of which echo the sentiment that he cares deeply for his charges and will always make time in support of others.
In his two short years here, TDF has also graced a number of sporting arenas with his talents. A golfer with pedigree himself, he has contributed to the golf programme expertly, making this very difficult game seem straightforward. He was able to disseminate to the golf team his own HMC Foursomes experience and personify composure in the face of adversity on the golf course. We will hopefully see him on the‘ sidelines’ in his new role at Lord Wandsworth College, where he is already lining up means to continue the resurrection of his Canford-born swing.
During his Cloister Times, TDF was also involved in Winchester’ s burgeoning tennis programme. As the named OW and Housemaster-Elect reflects,‘ In his final term, he also took on the running of school tennis, with organisational skills as rock-solid as his two-handed backhand, capping an excellent season by competing with Rupert Mercer in a Wykeham Day doubles exhibition against two members of the 1st VI.’
Pupils and colleagues alike are sad to see TDF go and Winchester’ s loss is Lord Wandsworth’ s gain, as he is able to move his work closer to family life. We wish him the very best of luck.

leadership of the chaplaincy, she taught Div, of which included English in the lower school. English was a natural continuation of her distinguished academic career as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol, while Div, though a new venture, allowed her to draw richly from her deep love of language, culture, theology, and philosophy. In both disciplines, she proved to be an inspiring and original presence in the classroom.
Her stewardship of the chaplaincy became even more central during Short Half 2022 and Common Time 2023, following the
