The Year of Experimental Travel
Northern Lights, Finland
Simply seeing the sights is no longer enough. Experiential travellers want
more. They want to go down the path less travelled and connect with
people from other cultures and backgrounds. They want travel to be fun
and interesting, not just a blur of places and faces. They want to experience
cultures, languages, food, and people.
Experiences, Not Just Travel
Experiential travel is any kind of travel
where you immerse yourself in the local
culture. It is the desire to absorb your
surroundings and the experience. You
become part of the landscape, live like
a local and connect to your very being.
Experiential travel is authenticity,
a heightened feeling of emotion, an
opportunity to enrich your soul and your
life.
The aim is to find a balance between the
four. While in Paris, don’t just see the
sights. Spend a day at The Louvre, then
the next day walk along the river Seine.
In China, take a few days to volunteer at
a moon bear sanctuary, before you walk
The Great Wall. Or visit the Americas with
a four day trek through the mountains of
Peru, followed by a heart racing surfing
adventure in Hawaii.
Experiential Travel Travel to Experience
You might think that all travel is
experiential, and that is true. You go, and
you have an experience. However, there is
more to it than that. There are actually four
different types of experiential travel: Experiential travel helps you to better
understand the world we live in. However,
in this fast-paced world ‘stopping to smell
the roses’ is a big ask. You can still do the
seven-cities-in-seven-days holiday, but you
can also take time out to experience. Chase
the experiences that you can’t capture in
photos, and seek the experiences that will
help you live the life you were meant to live.
• Education, which is active absorption
• Esthetics, also known as passive
immersion
• Escapism, another word for active
immersion
• Entertainment, complete passive
absorption
