CASE STUDY
Designed by Studio Patricia Urquiola in collaboration with Lisbon-based Mörschel Arquitectos, Luzzi draws on Portugal’ s connections with Africa, the Atlantic, South America and Asia. Its visual language translates these diverse cultural references through colour, material and texture. Yellows evoke African connections and the energy of the South; greens and blues reference the Atlantic and Portugal’ s relationship with the sea; while terracotta and clay tones recall the earth, traditional architecture and the historic routes of the East.
Materials including Lioz limestone, cork, reinterpreted tiles, local woods and ceramics are combined with global references, creating an interior that feels distinctly Lisbon while looking beyond Portugal’ s borders.
The jury praised the project’ s consistency and clarity of vision. Michael Stillman, CEO and Founder of Quality Branded and a member of the 44-strong international jury, described the project as:“ Bold. Very bold, and the consistent way in which the same idea is worked on and reinterpreted in so many ways, always with great attention and intention.”
For Cajetan Araújo, General Manager at Andaz Lisbon, the award reflects the role that design plays in establishing the restaurant within Lisbon’ s evolving hospitality landscape:
“ Winning the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2026 reinforces Luzzi’ s position as one of Lisbon’ s most distinctive dining destinations. More importantly, the award recognizes the project’ s unique spatial identity and its bold reimagining of the rooftop experience, transforming it into one of Lisbon’ s most compelling lifestyle venues. Luzzi- the world’ s first‘ Modern Lusitanian’ concept was conceived as a place where gastronomy and design come together with art, fashion and music, while reflecting the socio-cultural influences through the culinary journey’ s that have shaped Portugal. This award is a fitting recognition of that vision and of the teams who conceived and brought it to life.”
Luzzi’ s design is closely connected to its culinary concept, Modern Lusitanian Cuisine, which explores Portugal’ s global cultural connections through food. The menu draws on Portuguese traditions alongside influences from Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola, Goa, Macau and Japan, bringing these references together in contemporary and accessible combinations.
The restaurant’ s rooftop setting further shapes the experience, with an open layout designed to evolve throughout the day, moving from late-afternoon dining into an evening destination for food, drinks, music and socialising.
Studio Urquiola, founded by Patricia Urquiola in 2001, has an international portfolio spanning hospitality, retail, residential, exhibition and product design. Urquiola is widely recognised for her work across architecture, interior and product design, with projects developed for international brands and institutions.
Mörschel Arquitectos brought its knowledge of Lisbon’ s architectural context to the project, contributing to both Luzzi and the wider architectural intervention of the building housing the new Andaz Lisbon.
The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards recognition places Luzzi among an international field of hospitality projects and marks a significant milestone for the restaurant following its opening as part of the new Andaz Lisbon.
