An Effective Approach to a Sustainable Hospitality Chain

- GEO GREEN POWER-
In the UK, the hospitality sector is second only to manufacturing for its high energy consumption. This is according to recent analysis from the Office for National Statistics, which analysed the impacts of higher energy costs on UK businesses between 2021 and 2024.
Published in May 2025, this economic analysis showed that since 2022, hospitality businesses – in particular those which mainly offer food and drink services – have been more likely to cut their trading hours to reduce energy costs.
These are troubling circumstances, but the reality is that while energy costs remain high, hospitality businesses can help to reduce this financial burden by shifting towards sustainability.
Here, we’ ve taken a closer look at the situation with expert analysis of the sector and useful guidance around the benefits hospitality businesses can achieve by considering renewable energy.
An‘ energy hungry’ sector
To give a clearer understanding of why this sector is being hit particularly hard right now, Kat
Auckland Communications and Projects Director of nationwide renewable energy installers, Geo Green Power has offered these thoughts:
“ The hospitality sector is very energy hungry, more so if you’ re providing catering. The high gas and electricity use within kitchens also tends to come at peak times and at high intensity. This, alongside the high wholesale costs we’ re experiencing right now, is why so many within the sector are feeling the pinch.
“ This is of course exacerbated for businesses and hotel chains that operate 24 / 7, have multiple sites and lots of customers.”
Looking for a sustainable solution?
“ Ultimately you will save the most on your bills if you can reduce your energy usage and find a cheaper source. There are ways to reduce energy demand, and many businesses run programmes to switch off appliances, swap lightbulbs to LEDs and use timer switches. These initiatives save money and reduce emissions, and if you electrify your kitchens and heating, you will remove your gas bill entirely.
