BATHROOMS

Inclusive Hygiene- TORK-

In the world of luxury hospitality, every detail matters. From the scent in the lobby to the feel of the linen, guests judge every aspect of a facilities’ operation. Yet one crucial element often defines a guest’ s lasting impression: the washroom experience.
The new global Tork Insight Survey 2025, reveals that only one in five washrooms meets hygiene expectations in the UK. 24 %* of people cited in the survey cite‘ un-hygienic’ as a reason for not using a washroom, with 50 %* saying that they have not used a washroom at a venue even though they needed to.
For hotels and venues that pride themselves on perfection, the implications are clear: hygiene isn’ t just about cleanliness, it’ s about brand integrity and repeat customer. Half of all guests take action after a poor hygiene experience; whether by shortening their stay, avoiding food and drink, or leaving a negative review- all of which are harmful to business.
Tork, an Essity brand and global leader in professional hygiene, is calling for a new era of inclusive hygiene in washrooms considering the visible and invisible barriers faced by many due to a range of individual abilities, needs and circumstances. The survey found that 95 %* of people with conditions affecting washroom use aren’ t wheelchair users, meaning traditional concepts of“ accessibility” often miss the mark. When it comes to hand washing, sensitivities such as arthritis, hygiene concerns and sensory challenges all demand thoughtful product choice and design.
Further, in the UK, 17 %* of those who report a skin condition believe it can be made worse by harsh soaps and poor hygiene. Hotels must be wary of the hygiene products they stock to accommodate the needs of their guests. Tork offers a range of soaps and lotions all of which undergo a strict product safety assessment and are dermatologically tested, and the Tork dispenser development process is the first in the world to be certified according to the Design for All standard( EN 17161).
For luxury hospitality brands, this insight underscores a simple truth: true sophistication means care for every guest, in every detail, including the washroom.
