Complaints about poor restaurant acoustics is a growing trend with customers voicing their opinions on TripAdvisor , Yelp or other review sites . Research from Zagat found that noise was the 2nd most common customer complaint in restaurants . Meanwhile , data from Soundprint , an app that allows users to measure the loudness of venues , found that in over half of the restaurants tested , noise levels were above 76 decibels – around the same noise as a lawnmower .
What these restaurants lack is effective acoustic absorption . Double tablecloths and thick curtains will help , which is great if it suits the style of the restaurant . If not , the walls and ceiling ( even if you have an exposed soffit for an industrial vibe ) offer the most surface area to help reduce excessive noise .
