38 THE WORLD OF HOSPITALITY
SLEEP & EAT
Sleep & Eat
Inspiring New Thinking in Hospitality Innovation
Exhibition
Sleep & Eat, Europe’s leading design and
innovation event for the hospitality sector,
returns to London Olympia on 19th – 20th
November. With the theme for 2019 of
“Social FlexAbility”, the show will be exploring
one of the most challenging issues of our
technology-enabled age through Sleep & Eat
Sets – concept guestrooms, restaurant and
bar – and the Sleep & Eat Conference. As in
previous years, the event will also feature an
international exhibition, bringing back world-
renowned manufacturers and introducing
newcomers to launch their latest collections
and showcase their most design-led products.
Visitors can also expect a range of experiential
spaces tapping into art, innovation and young
design talent.
Mark Gordon, Brand Director of the event
explains: “With the rise of electronic and social
media, people are starting to disconnect from
each other both by accident and choice. In
future, hotels will be in the vanguard of
combatting this by providing guests with
the opportunity to reconnect with others
in-person and, indeed, to re-connect with
themselves. The challenge for the industry
will be to provide flexible spaces where users
can activate the social experience of their
choice. This year, we will be asking our design
collaborators and conference speakers to
share their vision on how this might become
reality in a hospitality setting.”
With the full Conference line-up yet to be
announced, some names and session topics
One of the event’s perennial favourites
is the concept room sets. The roll call for
2019 reveals an intriguing roster of new and
long-established practices based in London,
Manchester, Paris and Singapore. They are:
Twenty2Degrees, Miaja Design Group, Hat
Design and Maria Tibblin & Co who will
each create a concept guestroom together
with NAME Architecture and SpaceInvader
who will realise a concept restaurant and
bar respectively. This year is also promising
an additional ideas-generating experience
reflecting the theme. The Social Hub is being

have been confirmed. These include a panel of
international hospitality designers, moderated
by Harry Harris whose firm is behind the
development of such hybrid benchmarks
as The Curtain and The Collective Canary
Wharf, discussing design trends in co-working
and social spaces. In a debate moderated
by Robin Sheppard, Chairman of Bespoke
Hotels, much respected hotel operators will
tackle the notion of social flexibility from
their perspective. Arnaud De Saint-Exupéry,
General Manager of the Hyatt Churchill, Dale
MacPhee of Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh and
CitizenM’s UK Area Manager, Eylem Ozgun,
will consider how different brands ensure that
activating their public spaces pays dividends.

For many, Sleep & Eat is also the ‘go to’ show
for its high-quality, design-led exhibition
which features some 160 companies and
is recognised as the destination for doing
business and networking with peers.
Reflecting the growing convergence between
hotel, restaurant and bar design, the exhibitor
line-up this year includes many names which
supply all three sectors, such as premium
furniture manufacturer, Morgan; luxury
porcelain tile specialists, Ceramiche Atlas
Concorde; FF&E and OS&E supplier, AHK;
and Faro Barcelona who will be launching a
number of new products.
