HIGHLIGHTED MEDICAL PROTOCOLS
A multidisciplinary team created a list of common medical conditions , expected to be frequently seen and a standardized set of medical care protocols were developed . This facilitated planning medical supply inventory at venues and the staffing expertise needed for treatment stations . It ’ s worth noting that supply chain disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic caused a threat to the availability of many types of medical supplies . This required special consideration and planning for hard to procure items such as splints , IV fluids , and other disposable products . We would like to highlight Heat Injury as the most common medical condition seen during all of the events . The complete listing of medical protocols used can be found in appendix A or in the Training and Reference Materials at the end of this playbook .
HEAT INJURY
Temperatures ranged from 100 ° F ( 37.8 C ) during the day to 72 ° F ( 22.2 C ) at night for most of the event days . The average humidity was over 75 %. The main cooling methods were removing individuals from the heat source and using evaporative cooling fans . Every attempt was made to use oral rehydration solutions rather than IV fluid rehydration therapy , whenever possible . Ice baths were available during most events , and were used mostly for athletes finishing their competitions at outdoor venues ( i . e . Lacrosse , Duathlon , etc .).
