Loves of a Lifetime

Carolyn Rushton

What things in life do I truly love?

All things of earth and heaven above.

I love a gently rippling stream,

a moment's rest, or a short daydream.

Oh, the splendor of an Autumn day,

the delightful smell of new-mown hay.

The moon a-shimmer through the clouds,

a nearby screech owl, hooting loud.

A window pane adorned with frost,

a sailboat by the breezes tossed.

See th' seagull floating o'er the dock?

peaks and crags of mountain rocks.

Soft grass underneath bare feet,

the miniature spring leaves on oak trees.

A beach's gently shifting sands,

soft snow drifts formed by the Sculptor's hands.

A dense, dark forest's inner still,

an early morning Whip-poor-will.

The sunlight, warm against my face,

Aloneness, in a secret place.

I love a night when stars surround,

love the warm softness of garden ground.

Jagged lightning in a summer storm,

winter's ice, at creek's edge formed.

The mist above a morning lake,

the first mushroom, or first snowflake.

The waves that break along a shore,

a wild bird's song and so much more.

The fun of winning at game,

a picnic lunch, an evening rain.

A friend who needs be by my side,

to ski or sled, says "What a ride!"

Fresh air, sunsets, kites on high,

joy of joys, wild flowers! oh my!!

Just open up your eyes and see,

the blessings here for you and me.

As long as God is keeping score,

His gifts are what I'm living for.

The wonders of each and every day,

How grateful! Thank God in all ways.
