The Williamsonian Winter 2017 | Page 15

Joe said , he won ’ t be ready for a rematch for about two months . I assume he is referring to his 0 and 1 bout with John Linker .
Next is Ed Shiffert who reports he and Gert are doing great . Gert is slowly getting her voice back following her paralyzed vocal cords caused by pneumonia she had a year ago . Ed is planning a fishing trip for the spring .
Bob and Maria Evans chimed in from their Florida headquarters . They will be heading to New Orleans and Texas , then make their way to Oregon for their grandson ’ s wedding in June . Following that back to the East Coast . Hopefully , we will see them at Homecoming in October . Bob reports both he and Maria have dealt with several health issues and surgery over the last year .
Recently both Pete D ’ Orazio from school and I visited Frank Riley . Frank seems to be doing quite well in his new surroundings . He is getting excellent care according to Barb . I was impressed with his apartment like setting . We talked with Frank for several hours . He seemed quite alert and had good memories of our Williamson days . I know we all wish Frank well and hope to see him again soon .
As for Leah and I , we are doing very well . Leah is doing a lot better with her RA , as she recently changed doctors . I enjoyed another great year hunting this season . I harvested a nice 6-point buck on the first Saturday of the season . I was the guest of Richard Getz for bear season . Richard and Barb have a place in Potter County . While they call it a cabin , it ’ s more like a second home . Really spoiled with all the amenities . As you all know , Richard is an honorary member of our 6W0 class . We are both proud and happy he continues to be part of our class reunions . Richard recently had a little heart issue , but happily is back to his usual hard work of helping out with his son ’ s masonry supply yard . Hopefully , by next week , Leah and I will be meeting Richard and Barb at Shady Maple for dinner .
We did receive several Christmas cards from classmates and other Williamson folks . Hope I don ’ t forget to list anyone . Greetings came from , Mummert , Getz , Brubakers , President Rounds , Fridays , Riley , Smith , Keller , Richardson 5W4 , Dick Storm 6W2 , Jim Day 6W2 , Carl Vairo , Tom Arena 6W9 , and Gino Maffei 5W3 . We are always glad to hear from all of you .
I believe I reported John Allen moved to be closer to their son . I sent an EM out with his new address . I am always enjoy hearing from “ Chet .”
Peter Feusner , I am happy to report , he also attends the 5W4 extended alumni group at their Shady Maple luncheons . He reports his wife is still working and supports his retirement . Good for you , Peter . Just yesterday I had a nice long and enjoyable phone conversation with Dean Hibbs . Currently , Dean is living at his winter retreat in the Florida Keys . For 20 years now , Dean continues to avoid the Pennsylvania winters . Of course , we brought up many of our old war stories from our WTS days . Mentioned of course , the old-time favorite was the time Dean had his girlfriend call the school president . Dean bragged all week that his funeral scam was going to get him a long weekend away from WTS . Well , following the phone call mentioning a grandmother had died and Dean needed to come right home it got quite interesting .
That evening as Dean was ready with his bag packed , we were all standing at the 5 p . m . line up and inspection . Mr . Jack Boyd began his walk past each shop , listening for the , “ all present and accounted for .” He approached Dean , and without missing a step , said , “ Oh , by the way , Dean , there won ’ t be any funeral this weekend .” Needless to say , those in ear shot could hardly keep from laughing out loud . The look on Dean ’ s face , we will never forget . On Saturday , Dean assumed his regular place raking leaves on the chain gang .
Buzzy Park , you changed your EM address . Kindly write to me with your new EM address . I have most of our class ’ EMs listed . However , I am still missing a few . Assuming the rest of you are online , please forward your EM address to me . It really makes it so easy to relay class news and events throughout the year .
I do want to report that our class can boast that we currently have seven Wanamaker Society members . They are Keller , Mummert , Davis , Iatesta , Righter , Berwager , and Hatchigian . As Andy and I are talking to others , we expect many more will be on board by Alumni Day . More info about the society can be found elsewhere in the Williamsonian . Remember to support our Williamson like it supported us .
Looking ahead , Alumni Day will be on June 3 , 2017 . We have been getting very good turnouts even on the non reunion years . Put the date down on your calendar . I hope to see many of you there . Don ’ t forget the Alumni Banquet that evening , too . I am hopeful you all are continuing with your membership dues . Still a great bargain is the life time membership .
Our class article can only be as interesting as your reporting to me . I have been writing our class news for over 56 years now . I am always anxious to hear from each of you . Our classmates want to know how you are doing . Remember , we are 6W0 . Never forget our life time of bonding and friendships . In the meantime , be well , safe , and enjoy life to the fullest .

Hi Guys ,
We recently caught up with Larry Ohm . Larry was from McSherrystown , Pa , a suburb of Hanover where he lived before attending Williamson . He spent his working career at Hanover Limestone Quarry where he worked his way up to superintendent of maintenance . After retiring he moved to Ocean City , Md ., where he owned a condo . With many visitors stopping in he quickly ran out of space . What did he do ? He bought a larger condo . While in Ocean City he kept busy with several part- time jobs — one as an employee of Ocean City , another as a painter , and a third as a resort rental inspector . As years went by the Ohms decided they wanted to be closer to family and friends and moved back to the Hanover area . Still wanting to stay busy Larry does some part- time work for the local Knights of Columbus . He slowed down on his time golfing since he was not happy with his
level of play . Sounds like he qualifies for playing the annual Williamson Golf Outing since none of us can play the way we used to . We are all a bunch of physical wrecks of various proportions , but none the less wrecks . Please , Larry , fill out the form for the Golf Outing and join us . We need you !
On Sept . 14 , Dave Miller hosted another lunch get-together at his home in Thornton , Pa . As in the past , Scotty brought crab cakes from his favorite supplier in Maryland . He cooked them and served them to us in Dave ’ s barn . Those who made it to this event were Blyler , Covington , Haggerty , Korab , Miller , our host , Oler , Pitonyak , Spiess , Swinehart , and yours truly . With Dave ’ s blessings we will be holding more luncheons in the future and we would like more class members to attend . If you have an interest , let me know . Williamson ’ s president , Michael Rounds , has expressed interest in stopping by to witness the 6W1 class spirit he has heard so much about .
On Saturday , Oct . 5 , 2016 , the Class of 6W1 celebrated its 55th reunion . The event was held at Barnaby ’ s Restaurant on Pennell Road a few miles from Williamson . Those attending from our class were Covington , Haggerty , Korab , Long , Miller , Slade , Spiess , Swinehart , and me . Some were accompanied by wives , friends , or came stag . The cost , which was reasonable , included an open bar , appetizers , a buffet dinner , and dessert . A few decades earlier the open bar would have pushed Barnaby ’ s into bankruptcy , but time takes its toll on our abilities . We also had to be on our good behavior since Carl Vairo was snapping pictures as the evening progressed . I believe everyone had an enjoyable time . The next time we gather for a reunion it will be our 60th , so please , everyone take special care of yourselves so we can partyhardy when the time arrives .
When you receive this issue of the Williamsonian the timing should be close to Alumni Day and the sign-up time for the annual Williamson Golf Outing . Sign up for both ! On Alumni Day you will see how beautiful the campus is in springtime . At the golf outing you will get a major dose of fresh air , sunshine , and exercise . But the best parts are the laughs and camaraderie .
Keep the dust off those clubs ! Scotty Oler , who is known for organizing golf outings , is planning one specifically for 6W1 class members . It will be a 1-day event to be played at a date that will be determined when he gets some feedback from those who want to participate . Each participant gets a free celebrity autograph of Rev . Joseph Haggerty . It ’ s bound to become a true family heirloom in time . The course Scotty chooses will be near Media .
Since we are on the subject of golf let ’ s stick to it . Dave Miller has been struggling with the problems that plague most of us . Knees are shot , joints are not flexible and are painful , and muscularity isn ’ t what it once was . In spite of all this , the love of golf drives him to continue playing three times a week when the weather allows . When some of his past attributes faded he concentrated on what was left . We all used to try to drive the ball as far as we possibly could , swinging so hard that we looked like we were coming out of our shoes . Dave learned that by accepting his shortcomings and concentrating on finesse , touch and accuracy , he has been producing lower scores than ever . Something tells
me that some older and wiser gofers tried to teach us these facts many years ago , but then it was hard to control our raging testosterone . Dave hooked up with a group of retired guys as an alternate , playing when a regular couldn ’ t make it . Now he is a regular and gets more playing time . They play at many courses which sharpens up your skills at adapting to different conditions . I ’ m jealous !
John Korab is back on the road . During October , he traveled to Europe and visited Slovenia , Croatia , and Bosnia-Herzegovina . His total number of countries visited has reached 120 . After returning home , John went to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge , Tenn . Luckily , he was there to see the area before the devastating fire that almost destroyed Gatlinburg . He saw smoke from a distance and managed to alter his route in order to avoid any close encounters .
What is a class report without including some of the antics of Joe Haggerty and Scotty Oler ? At the time of this article the pro football season was winding down . At one point Scotty was leading Joe in their private betting pool , but then the momentum swung the other way and Joe was on top . If you don ’ t hear the final tally you can be sure that Scotty came out ahead . If Joe is the winner he will call everyone in his phone directory with the news . If you want peace and quiet , root for Scotty .
As usual , the plea goes out for information about the goings on of any and all 6W1 classmates .

Greetings on the 55th anniversary of our graduation ! I guess I ’ ll have to say no news is good news , because the dearth of news from you all is all I have to report . You ’ ll have to wait until the next Williamsonian . Better yet , today is a good day to call or email me , or sit down and write a lengthy snail mail letter .
I ’ ve spoken with more than half of our class . They all are in favor of a reunion celebration on Friday , June 2 , 2017 . This date will allow people to attend events on Alumni Day at the school ( Saturday , June 3 ), if they so desire .
I estimate that 20 – 25 classmates and spouses plan to attend the reunion . I ’ ll send further information soon with more details . Please let me know if you ’ ve moved or changed your email address since our 2012 reunion .
Remember that any time of the year is a good time to send a donation to support the school ’ s mission of educating the next generation of talented craftsmen and entrepreneurs . I await news of you and your family .
As Always , Obie 6W2
