Alumni Happy Hour is a New Holiday Favorite for Williamson Alumni
11
There was a full house at the Alumni Happy Hour on Dec . 9 , as Williamson alumni gathered for some holiday cheer .
Alumni of all ages met in Ardmore for a casual happy hour to kick-off the holiday season . The event was part of a series of new opportunities being offered annually to alumni to gather and reconnect with classmates and fellow graduates .
Hosted by the Advancement Alumni Relations Office , the happy hour was held at Sam ’ s Brick Oven Pizza , Craft Beer and Wine Bar , an establishment owned by the family of alumnus Chris Thornton 9W7 .
Alumni enjoyed holiday cheer , fresh brick oven pizzas , and left the event with a small seasonal gift – a Williamson – branded ice scraper for their car .
The Alumni Relations office is pleased to coordinate new events , as well as continue to host traditional Williamson activities like our annual Alumni Day event and class reunions .
Another event took place this spring , when alumni were invited to a Williamson day at Citizen Bank Park to watch the Phillies take on the Milwaukee Brewers . The Phillies outing was well attended and included a pre-game BBQ at the park ’ s “ Rooftop ” hospitality . [ Unfortunately , the Phillies lost 5-3 .]
Another event will be held July 30 , when Williamson heads “ down the shore ” for the 2nd annual “ Alumni at the Jersey Shore ,” which will be hosted from 2-5 p . m . at the Inlet , North Wildwood . The event will take place on the Inlet ’ s large covered deck overlooking the ocean , and will include a 3-hour open bar and buffet and Williamson giveaways .
Alumni are also invited back to campus for our annual Alumni Day celebration on June 4 . Williamson will honor all of our alumni with special recognition for the Class of 7W2 ’ s 50th reunion and for those classes ending in 1 , 6 , 7 , or 2 who are celebrating 5- or 10-year milestone anniversaries .

MacMullen ’ 23 Receives SAR ’ s William Yearsley ' 41 Award
Richard MacMullen , a junior machine tool technology student , received the Sons of the American Revolution ’ s ( SAR ) William J . Yearsley Award at the Founder ’ s Day ceremony in the Clara Schrenk Memorial Chapel on Feb . 3 .
The award , named after William Yearsley 4W1 , an SAR member and founder of the award , is presented to a junior who has shown outstanding citizenship and the qualities of industry , self-discipline , personal integrity , reliability , and contributions above the call of duty . He also must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and have fewer than 28 disciplinary points .
MacMullen is an exemplary Williamson student . He has had a perfect 4.0 GPA every semester and has received no points . He works on the student newspaper and is one of only a few students to be in the group that listens to student appeals , which is a position of great trust . His first year , he received the Swinehart Award as the outstanding freshman machinist .
Part of the reason he chose the machinist trade is so he and his identical twin brother , Dave , a power plant senior , will be able to work together after graduation ; it is common for machinists to work in the power industry .
He and his brother worked on boilers together last summer in California at California Boilers and again over the recent Christmas break . This coming summer , he will be working as a project manager at CBG Builders in Washington , D . C .
He lives in Drexel Hill , Pa ., and attended Monsignor Bonner High School where he played baseball and football . At that time , he realized he wanted to learn a trade and chose Williamson after hearing many good things about the school .
The award was presented by Bill Baker , president of the SAR ’ s Philadelphia-Continental Chapter , and Steve Kopsick , SAR ’ s first vice president . Their chapter is one of the largest of 450 chapters in the National Society , with about 350 members .
The SAR is the leading male lineage society that perpetuates the ideals of the War for Independence . As a historical , educational , and patriotic , nonprofit corporation , they seek to maintain and expand the meaning of patriotism , respect for national symbols , the value of American citizenship , and the unifying force of “ e pluribus unum ” that was created from the people of many nations — one nation and one people .
The primary requirement for membership is authentic documentation proving direct lineage to a patriot who supported the revolutionary cause . As direct descendants of the patriots who worked and fought to create our nation , members seek to preserve the principles they established as the very foundation of this great republic .
The Class of 1W0 had a good turnout at the Alumni Happy Hour and enjoyed getting caught up on the latest news of their classmates .
Freshmen are Receiving Valuable Leadership Insight
The freshman Class of 2W4 is receiving an invaluable opportunity to interact with and learn from business leaders within the construction trades as part of Williamson ’ s partnership with Executive Leaders Radio ( ELR ).
Beginning in February , every few weeks , small teams of freshmen took part in a unique virtual seminar with presidents , CEOs , and other business leaders from around the nation . There were six sessions this spring and the rest of the Class of 2W4 will participate fall semester 2022 .
The ELR program pairs teams of five to six Williamson students with two business leaders in a 90-minute virtual interview . Students are able to have discussions and ask a wide variety of questions across a broad range of topics from leadership philosophy to personal business experiences .
The ELR staff has been impressed with the drive and energy of the students as they have asked the business leaders such questions as “ What does it take to be successful ? What traits do you look for in an employee ? What advice do you have for someone starting their career ?”
At a future date , the ELR staff will select a 15-minute segment of each session to include on an ELR national radio broadcast highlighting Williamson and our next generation of leaders . [ Williamson will release a notice stating when the segments will be broadcast .]
Leaders participating in the second session , were Brent Saul , vice president of Weld Wire Co ., King of Prussia , Pa .; Dave Farragut , president of United States Roofing Corp ., Norristown , Pa .; Erik Strid , founding principal of Concentus Wealth Advisors , Newtown Square , Pa .; and Jeff Mack , executive managing director , Newmark , Wayne , Pa ..
Students interacting with them were Matt Basler 2W4 , horticulture ; Josh Kirkpatrick 2W4 , carpentry ; Garrett Watkins 2W4 , masonry ; Alex Whiteman 2W4 power plant ; and Carlos Palma 2W4 , carpentry .
Executive Leaders Radio is a weekly business radio show which broadcasts interviews with prominent CEOs , CFOs , and presidents , nationally on about 125 radio stations . The programs are intended to demonstrate what it takes to succeed .
