Class Of ’12 Graduates
At 119th Commencement
The 78 members of the Class of 1W2
were sent into the world as “Williamson Men” at the conclusion of the 119th
commencement under a tent in front of
the Main Building on June 1.
The address was given by the husband and wife team of H.F. “Gerry”
and Marguerite Lenfest, media entrepreneurs and philanthropists who several years ago donated $20 million to
strengthen Williamson’s endowment.
Speaking first, Marguerite Lenfest
told the seniors they are ahead of so
many other graduates who now have
debt and urged them to take advantage
of the opportunities that come their
way. “Keep your options open and be
flexible as you put your training and
skills to work.”
Gerry Lenfest told them they have
learned a trade and the moral values
which will help them throughout their
life. “It was my values that helped me
achieve success in business. If you keep
the values learned at Williamson you
will be successful in life and work.”
He added, “You should remember
to give back to Williamson so that others can receive the same education you
received. You are leaving Williamson
with no debt and you learned the basics
of a trade, the values of hard work, and
a moral code.”
He also quoted Isaiah Williamson’s
Deed of Trust which states that the purpose of the school is to produce “useful
and respected citizens.”
President Guy Gardner then presented the Lenfests with the Williamson
Award for Community Service, a steel
cube made by machine tool technology
students.
Gardner, who began his tenure as
president the freshman year of this
class, announced that in following a
long-held tradition of class gifts the
Class of 1W2 presented the school
with a renovated School Store and Cafe
which is now open and ready for business.
He reminded the audience there was
already a class of 1W2 100 years ago.
“This speaks to the longevity of Williamson.”
On a somber note, Gardner spoke
of Michael Savage, a classmate who
died in an accident in the Power Plant
at the beginning of his freshman year.
“Michael Savage was taken from us too
early. He is here in spirit today and has
been the last three years. We are celebrating his life as well.”
Jim Simpson, president of the senior
class, before passing the senior gavel to
Joshua Altman, treasurer of the Class of
1W3, said “We waited a long time for
this day. Our parents helped us make
it and everyone at Williamson; the
school is like a family. We worked as a
group to achieve a goal and we used the
school’s values every day.
