Storms , bushfires and floods are a big part of life in Australia , so it ’ s good to know that the locals of your community have your back .
Ray White Bullsbrook administrator and property manager Tammy Foster ( pictured below ) is one of those people , she ’ s a volunteer firefighter with her local Muchea BFB and SES volunteer with Swan SES in Western Australia .
Tammy has been an SES Volunteer with Swan SES for 10 years and is currently a Deputy Local Manager . She is also a member of Muchea Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and has been for seven years , where she is currently 2nd Lieutenant . Tammy is also a Peer Support Officer within DFES and was involved in the Are They Triple OK ? Campaign for Emergency Services and RUOK ? Day .
The idea to join first came from one of Tammy ’ s good friends who joined the Swan SES a couple of years before her after feeling helpless during the 2010-2011 Queensland floods .
“ I went along on the first training day back from their break in February 2014 and enjoyed myself . I was learning new skills and meeting new people that wanted to make a difference ,” she said .
“ Without volunteers , I don ’ t think Australia would be able to cope , especially in Emergency Services with approximately 26,000 volunteers in WA alone .
“ I think volunteering helps you become involved in the community , make new friends and assist people who are in need . You have a feeling of belonging to something that is making a difference .”
Volunteering with the SES has also given her a new perspective in her real estate role as well . Some of the things she learned during her volunteering role have helped her when receiving questions from owners or tenants in regards to their properties .
“ I can assist in ensuring that firebreaks are completed on time and to standard for owners and when there is storm damage can advise if SES assistance is required or if the insurance needs to be contacted for the repairs ,” she said .
“ I think the ability to manage many different tasks at once is something learned and crosses over from work with sales admin and property management and Emergency Services roles .”
