Write to Flourish

The end of an era

“ What would you like with your breakfast? A cool sax solo or a some laid back piano vibes?” Now this looks a rather lovely thing. A bit of live jazz while you have your breakast. A top-notch rhythm section( Joss Peach-piano, Terry Packbass, Milo Fell-drums) will be backing hand-picked fantastic guest artists each month. The first guest soloist will be singer Lucy Pickering. Lucy has been singing and swinging for over 25 years, and regularly works with many of Sussex’ s great jazz ensembles. As well as featuring in Chris Coull’ s Big Band and fronting her own jazz quartet, she also has an Americana covers band Court & Spark( the name should give you a clue) who’ ll be here next month for their album launch. Sunday, July 13 · 10:15am- 12:30pm 30 Cheapside, Brighton BN1 4GD https:// www. ironworks-studios. co. uk /

And, after 40 years, that was that. It was a relatively quiet Thursday when Vinod closed the doors for the last time to go off and spend some well-deserved peace and quiet with Meena. Earlier, a group of local residents had organised an impromptu street party. No fanfare, no posters, no fuss. Probably the way Vinod would have wanted it.

A local shop is much more than a place where you rush out to buy whatever, butter or, more likely, wine or, increasingly, crisps. It’ s a cornerstone of the community. These are places that keep an eye out, that notice if Mrs Goggins hasn’ t been in for a few weeks, somewhere safe you can leave your keys so your partner can pick them up later. Bright News, under Vinod’ s stewardship was all that and more. If you were around during the Covid era you’ ll remember.
But all things must pass and we all move on. The new Bright News will have its own personality and will forge its own identity which will be different but will, in its own way, also be great. And you never know, maybe the new guys will also be secret tap dancing champions.
