Are you feeling off? It might be your hormones
Ever had that feeling where something just isn’ t quite right? You feel bloated, snappy, exhausted— or maybe just not yourself. You can’ t put your finger on it, but you know something’ s off. For so many women I work with, this is often where the story starts. And often, the root of it all? Hormonal imbalance.
Hormones are the messengers that influence everything— your mood, sleep, energy, skin, digestion, weight, and more. When they’ re out of sync, you feel out of sync. Hormone Balance. The Foundation of Women’ s Health We often don’ t realise just how much our hormones affect us until they get out of synch. Oestrogen, in particular, plays a starring role in women’ s health. It works in harmony with other hormones, like progesterone, to help regulate the menstrual cycle, support fertility, and keep your body and mind feeling good.
But when things become unbalanced, it can feel like your body is working against you. Suddenly, the simplest things feel hard. You might be anxious for no reason, struggle to concentrate, feel irritable, achy, foggy, or just flat.
Signs Your Hormones Might Be Out of Balance Every woman’ s experience is different, but some of the most common signs of hormone imbalance include: l Feeling tired all the time, no matter how much you sleep l Mood swings or feeling overly emotional l Menstrual and fertility issues l Bloating, breast tenderness, or irregular periods l Poor sleep or waking up in the early hours l Low libido or vaginal dryness l Weight gain( especially around the middle) l Brain fog and memory slips l Anxiety, overwhelm, or low mood
So, What Throws Things Off? There are lots of factors that can affect your hormone balance: stress, diet, sleep, medications( like hormonal contraception), perimenopause, and even environmental toxins. Life today can be pretty relentless, and our hormones feel the ripple effect of that constant go-go-go.
For example, stress raises cortisol, which can throw off progesterone production- leaving oestrogen unchecked. And when your liver or gut aren’ t able to efficiently clear out used-up hormones, they can hang around in your system and start causing issues. Bringing Your Body Back Into Balance The good news is that your body wants to be in balance— and there’ s lots you can do to support it. Here are some gentle, effective ways to start:
l Nourish your liver and gut: These two are key players in processing and eliminating hormones. Think leafy greens, cruciferous veggies( like broccoli and cauliflower), fermented foods, and plenty of fibre. l Manage stress: Easier said than done, but carving out time for breathwork, walks in nature, or a calming evening routine can make a big difference to your hormone health. l Ditch the disruptors: Reduce your exposure to synthetic fragrances, plastics, and non-natural skincare products where you can. These can mimic oestrogen in the body and mess with your system. l Prioritise sleep: Quality rest helps regulate cortisol and supports your entire endocrine( hormone) system.
What About Perimenopause? In the years leading up to menopause, hormone levels can fluctuate wildly. You might have one great week followed by a stretch of feeling anxious, weepy, or physically drained as your hormones begin shifting. Understanding this phase, and getting the right support, can help you feel more in control and less like you’ re on a hormonal rollercoaster.
You Deserve to Feel Good You don’ t have to just put up with feeling bad. Your symptoms are your body’ s way of asking for support. Hormone balance is the cornerstone of a women’ s health. When your hormones are balanced, you feel more grounded, energised, clear, and connected to yourself.
