Jazz is a formidable character. She knows she is life-limited, but she is not giving up, no way. She could go the palliative path, or be in a hospice. Or she can rally all her strength and get out to battle the waves.
Once at sea she will be sailing solo. She cannot stop or land to complete the course, which should take 4-6 weeks if the wind is in the right direction. Usually Jazz has her beautiful golden retriever, Phoebe, at her side. She is a Crufts-award level assist dog, who can warn Jazz if she is going to faint or have a fit.
Unfortunately, Phoebe will stay on land. This will be tough for Jazz. But her wonderful foster-parents have made sure she has everything she needs from a stateof-the-art 27 foot Albin Vega yacht, to the latest tech. Jazz is also being filmed by a local company, Verri Media, to record her journey – she will be vlogging throughout.
Jazz doesn’ t know if she’ ll succeed the trip although she’ s recently done a trial run going round the Isle of Wight. Facing tough tides, strong winds and the limits of her body and energy with little sleep will be a huge challenge. But she knows Chris and Carolyn( and loads of well-wishers, friends and Phoebe), will be there to welcome her home whatever happens.
Of course, the RNLI will be there to pick her up if she gets into a scrape and she will be in constant contact with home. But Jazz is clear she is up to the challenge, albeit it’ s scary:“ I don’ t need anybody ese when I’ m on the boat”, says Jazz with a huge grin,“ It’ s only on the water that I feel I have real independence”.
