Andrew Polmear
It ’ s with great sadness that we pass on the news of the passing of Andrew Polmear last September . I met Andrew when I took over The Whistler , and he was an absolute angel , friendly and supportive , couldn ’ t do enough to help . He wrote a wine and cheese column , but needed no encouragement to write about environmental matters and , as was important at the time , Covid . He was smart , knowledgeable and , best of all , he cared . He was passionate about food and wine , about art and architecture ... about life .
Andrew was born on 30 April 1945 in Aylesbury , but spent most of his early life in Whitstable ,
Kent . He was a much-loved and respected GP in Hove for 20 years before moving to Sussex University to set up the Academic Unit of Primary Care , part of what became the Brighton and Sussex Medical School .
Music was a huge part of his life . He was Senior Chorister at Canterbury Cathedral in the 50s and a talented amateur cellist who was a founder member of Strings Attached , the Brighton and Hove Chamber Music Society . More than any of all that though , Andrew was a really lovely bloke . Warm and funny and smart - all the good things . He ’ ll be greatly missed .
