The Westminster Kennel Club was a sportsmen ’ s association at its inception , with members broadly interested in working their sporting dogs in the field . In fact , the Club ’ s emblem is a Pointer named Sensation that the Club imported from England to strengthen breeding programs . To celebrate that history and promote today ’ s top pointing dogs , The Westminster Kennel Club donates trophies to the winners of the AKC Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championships . The country ’ s largest field trial open to pointing breeds , the 2024 event was held in Madras , OR and had two divisions , Horseback and Walking .

Sponsored by The Westminster Kennel Club , this annual Dog Writers Association of America award goes to the writer who best exemplifies continued positive press coverage of dog shows and the sport of purebred dogs in America . It is named for Walter R . Fletcher , the longtime New York Times newspaper reporter who covered more than 40 Westminster Dog Shows . The 2025 Walter R . Fletcher Memorial Award winner receives a $ 500 cash award and a reserved seat in the press area for both nights of the 2025 dog show .
