David A . Helming
Dave Helming was a cherished part of the Westminster Kennel Club family , which he joined in 2015 when he became a Member . In his role as Show Chairman since 2017 , and Club Secretary since 2022 , Dave was an invaluable contributor to our community , leaving an indelible mark on the world of purpose-bred dogs . More importantly , Dave was a friend ; not only to me , but to so many — within and beyond the dog show community .
Dave ’ s passion for Newfoundlands began in 1965 when he , alongside his devoted wife Peggy , acquired their first dog , which began their legacy of champion Pouch Cove Newfoundlands . For over half a century , the Pouch Cove prefix became synonymous with excellence , producing over 300 champions , including the iconic CH Darbydale ’ s All Rise Pouch Cove ( Josh ), who captured the coveted Best in Show title at the 2004 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show .
A true luminary , Dave ’ s influence extended far beyond his breeding and show accomplishments . As a leader within the Club and the broader purpose-bred dog community , he served with distinction as the Grounds Chairman during our pivotal move to Piers 92 / 94 in Manhattan . His engineering acumen and meticulous attention to detail set the stage for the seamless execution of the 2013 show .
In 2017 , Dave assumed the role of Show Chairman . In this role , he presided over the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show with unparalleled dedication , ensuring that every detail contributed to the excellence and success of the show for exhibitors and spectators alike . When he became Club Secretary in 2022 , his dedication to the Club and the sport remained steadfast .
Beyond his formal roles within Westminster , Dave ’ s love for the sport resulted in a history of accomplishments , including the prestigious AKC Breeder of the Year award in 2005 , several National Specialty wins , as well as All-Breed Best in Show wins with his Newfoundland ’ s , Portuguese Water Dogs , and Norwich Terriers .
Dave was known for his kindness , humor , and unwavering love for dogs and the sport . I am thankful I had the privilege of knowing this extraordinary man . Today and every day , we honor Dave Helming ’ s lasting contributions , and we dedicate the 148th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show to his enduring legacy . Thank you , Dave !
