It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone as the Westminster Kennel Club ( WKC ) presents its 148th annual Dog Show .

Founded in 1877 in the heart of Manhattan as a gentleman ’ s club for dog lovers , the WKC has grown into a nationwide organization committed to animal companionship , breed education , and canine health . In the same spirit of unconditional love for which dogs are known , this group has contributed to various charitable efforts , including furthering medical research for these four-legged creatures , and rescuing them from abusive and unsafe conditions . In particular , I am pleased to shine a spotlight on its canine companionship initiative , which has connected service dogs to fire departments , military veterans , police officers , and other New Yorkers in need of companionship and support .
Today , we gather to celebrate WKC ’ s flagship event : its nationally televised , threeday dog show that highlights the incredible talents of some of the nation ’ s best show dogs , along with their handlers . Featuring agility competitions , dock diving , its highly anticipated Best in Show selection , and more , this exhibition of physical prowess and excellence excites viewers and teaches the audience about the unique qualities of each breed . On this occasion , I commend WKC for organizing this outstanding event and advocating for the wellbeing of all dogs .
