I
n the inaugural issue of The Well Magazine
in Summer 2012, we featured the story of
Yolan Henry and her mission to teach others
about domestic violence and its tragic consequences.
Henry’s daughter, Nova, 24, and granddaughter, Ava,
just 9 months old, were murdered in 2009—shot to
death. Nova was a victim of domestic violence and
her former boyfriend, Frederick Goings, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
Henry’s fight against domestic and gun violence
continues. She has more than 3,000 followers on Instagram (@lonihouse) and uses social media to educate and inform others about gun and domestic violence.
“I’m able to get my message across to people who I
wouldn’t see. Social media allows me to reach out to
celebrities,” Henry said.
It also keeps the memory of her loved ones and
other who have been lost to senseless violence alive.
“I refuse to let them become a sound bite or just a page in the newspaper that
passes,” Henry said. “I’m never going to stop. I want people to be aware.”
