This observation suggests that
raised cortisol levels may be
responsible for increased belly
fat. However, studies show that it
is the effect of cortisol on the liver
that causes the main damage to
overall health. Cortisol promotes
the accumulation of fat in the
liver and this “fatty liver” condition
appears to be responsible for serious metabolic problems such as insulin
resistance, which (as we have seen above) affects the body’s ability to
metabolize sugar.
Moreover cortisol inhibits the production of serotonin in the brain.
Serotonin is the neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of satisfaction,
calmness, and well-being. It is generated in the brain from the amino acid
tryptophan after we eat carbohydrates. This is why we crave those sugary
foods. Especially during times of stress when serotonin levels plunge and
cortisol is high. This can lead to carbohydrate binging and the blood sugar
and insulin spiking discussed in the previous section.
You are probably familiar with the term “comfort
food”. You know, when you sneak into the kitchen
at night when no one is looking and cut yourself a
large slice of cake, or break out that forbidden slab
of pure chocolate.
