Bridge makes lives easier
Ormoc City – At first,
the village chief of Brgy.
Naungan, Rafael Taneo,
would not sign the blank
forms when the footbridge
was turned over – and that
did not sit well with the city
officials, particularly Mayor
Richard Gomez, who was reportedly fuming mad in his
office. The blanks were actually for his name, date and
some other small detail.
The bridge was, for all intents and purposes, meant for
the use of the barangay folk
who years before had been riding bancas without outriggers
that could tip easily to either
side and capsize the boat. Now
with the bridge, they could
cross over to Sityo Kintolimbo
less than 50 meters at the other side of the river any time of
the day, rain or shine.
But according to Taneo,
the contractor Mac Builders
had promised to restore the
fishermen’s wharf that was
destroyed in the early phases
of the construction. He did not
sign the unfilled-up “project
acceptance” document of the
contractor days after it was
turned over to the barangay
because it did not follow their
agreement that he was going
to rebuild the wharf after the
bridge was finished
However, on the next day
after his interview with The
Weekly Vamguard, the contractor Manuel A. Chua sent
him a letter assuring him of
the wharf’s repair.
Taneo said he is not
against the project because it
will be beneficial for his constituents, making transportation between the sityo and
barangay easier. But some
questions remain in his head,
said Taneo. For instance, will
the village pay for maintenance of the bridge? This issue has so far remained unsettled. (By Jun Tarroza)
