Electricity goes to Camandag Is.

By Gina Dean
Calbayog City – After years of waiting, the people of Camandag Island will finally get a lease from darkness. The National Power Corporation- Small Power Utilities Group( NPC-SPUG) Energization Project, which was pursued during the time of DILG Sec. Mel Senen Sarmiento, was formally switched on last week with First District Congressman Edgar Mary Sarmiento gracing the occasion.
The berangays that will benefit from this electrification include Villahermosa, Balat-Guti, Pinanangnan, Sevilla, Lobe-lobe and Sitio Malobago. Brgy. Corocawayan, Sto. Nino, Samar where the substation is located.
“ Dili sayon mangita ug pundo pagdala sa kuryente sa isla. Pinaagi sa akong igsuon, si Mel, nadala nato ang kuryente diri sa isla ug naghinaut ko nga inyo pud atimanon. Dako kayo ang tabang niining kuryente pag-abot sa turismo ug negosyo dinhe sa Camandag Island,“ said Sarmiento.
The congressman said he will regularly visit the

three island towns of Samar – Sto. Nino, Almagro and Tagapul-an- to prove his sincerity in serving the people. He also appealed to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings as it would be one of the bases in promoting local tourism and other potentials of the island. He reminded everyone to avoid gambling and instead try to improve their economic conditions.
On the other hand, SAMELCO 1 General Manager Ida Ballos said the project is part of SAMELCO’ s Missionary Electrification
Program. There will be no profits here because it is a subsidized operation in the island town.
She added that for the first district of Samar, the NPC has four areas in the island towns of Sto. Nino, ALamgaro, Tagapul-an and Libucan, Tarangnan where the rates are different compared to other areas.
“ Kada planta may computation, navary san presyo san krudo / fuel and maintenance cost nga ginhahatag san NPC-SPUG. Same rates with other missionary areas – blend an ira rates. Sa yana, mayda na more or less 500 applications in Camandag Island. Naghuhulat pa kami san iba kay ungay man sira nga dapat matagan kuryente. Makuri ini nga project sanglit kunta magin aktibo sira san pagbayad ngan magpahibaro dayon sa opisina kun mayda problema nga maeksperiensyahan dinhe,” she clarified.
The NPC-SPUG Power Plant at Camandag Island started its construction in June 2015 at the cost of Php16.6 million. Just like in the neighboring island towns, lights will be turned on at 6:00 in the evening until 12 midnight. #
