Heroes
by Carol Hogan
Heroes are those who allow the use of mind and body,
soul and spirit for the fulfillment of another’s purpose.
Serving God, family and country
they do not falter when called.
Those who reject such service often
hide behind cynicism, criticism and hate.
Their words project a spotlight of suspicion and
draw the light of true analysis askew,
shedding less on their own lack of substance.
Their biggest claims to fame – or infamy –
are that no one really knew them at all.
How sad.
It’s the quiet peace of the returned hero,
the one who simply rejoins our everyday world again,
it is this person we should emulate.
For his sacrifice, however made,
is the first ingredient in the recipe of human community.
Heroes walk without fanfare,
they do not hide behind loud and bitter facades.
Rather they glow from within the light of truth and love;
beacons to us all along the way.
