WHAT DO YOU ABOUT,

But Rarely Do?

By Patricia Detwiler

Dream

hat’s right, a vacation. Innkeepers rarely spend the time or make the time planning their own vacation. You spend

everyday making your guest experience memorable. How many times have you dreamed about a few days or even a week off so you can regenerate your own spirit. There are so many reasons not to leave the inn. I don’t know anyone who could run this business like I would, so I can’t take the chance of upsetting guest! I don’t know any inn-sitters! I need the money! There are more excuses available than the days off for a vacation you should treat yourself to. There is a time every year, in your off season, of course, when the inn business slows down. That’s the perfect time to plan your vacation.

For those Inns who have a staff, cross training your employees to take over the front desk so you can spend a few days or even a few hours elsewhere is very important to giving you more time for yourself with less stress. What happens if you have an emergency? Having a plan for the unexpected is a good idea.

When you don’t have a staff – what do you

do? Incorporating someone you trust into the

workings of your Inn can be beneficial for more

than just a vacation. I found over the years as

an innkeeper myself, that not just anyone can

step into your shoes, but they are our there.

There are very good inn-sitters. Check with your local and national hospitality associations to find a good one that meets your needs.

You’ll find that when you take care of yourself, you are refreshed to take care of others. Food for thought!
