So much for the made-up stuff, what about real life larys on TV? A couple of years ago, an episode of Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies series featured a nice guy called Duncan talking about his laryngectomy. Great, you might think… so what’s the problem? Well, for a start, I had to sit through the best part of an hour’s worth of even more cringe-inducing telly – and I had to see a lot of things I really didn’t want to see in the process. And one more gripe. I know what Embarassing Bodies is trying to do. I know it’s one of those trendily ironic titles – but I’m still tired of the association of disability and disfigurement coming under the label ‘embarrassing’. When’s it going to stop? Perhaps only when we see our first neck breather in Albert Square? Or taking a pint at the Rovers Return? Let’s hope we don’t have too long to wait! ? Going On Holiday?
