Technology is all around us. It can’ t be avoided.
Social media can be viewed as a good or bad thing. And that is exactly how it should be viewed. The internet has multiple uses for good, such as connecting with long distance family and friends, finding useful information, and finding creative ideas that spark your own creativity.
I enjoy using Instagram and Pinterest for these reasons. I also enjoy long text conversations or facetime calls with friends that live even on the other side of the world.
Social media has opened up ways to connect that we have never been able to have before and it is very useful!
But yet, our world is slowly losing grip of what it means to be connected. Instead of a note in the mail for a birthday, we type an impersonal“ Happy birthday!” on Facebook. Instead of long conversations at coffee shops, we resort to sending a quick text. While wanting to be connected with our friends through social media, we become disconnected with the friends right around us.
So how can we do better?
A quote that I like to remind myself of is“ Wherever you are, be all there.”(- Jim Elliot) Be present. Pay attention. You are able to have close friends right beside you, so why not cherish that? Listen. Everybody wants someone who will listen. Share what’ s going on in your life.
Something I catch myself doing is when someone asks me,“ How are you?” I just spit out the usual reply,“ Good”. I could take a moment and tell them how I truly am, whether it be how good life has been or about something I’ ve been struggling with.
