“ Amelia, Amelia, wake up” Amelia recognized the voice as that of her mother. She turned over and buried her head deeper into her comforter.“ Amelia” the voice persisted, except harsher this time. Amelia knew better than to ignore her mother the second time, so she groaned and sat up. Her mother was busy opening her bedroom blinds, and the sunlight streamed in. Mother turned from the window,“ Ah, finally you’ re up, you sleepy-head. You have to leave for Ms. Averies’ in 20 minutes. You better get a move on.” Amelia yawned and nodded. Mother left the room, and Amelia robotically showered and changed into a comfortable sun dress. She quickly pulled her hair back into a messy-bun and clipped her veil in place. On her way downstairs, she caught a glimpse of her reflection on the hallway mirror. She sighed as she examined the sleep-deprived eyes looking back at her.“ Huh, yah, sleepdeprived thanks to that grumpy old Ms. Averies.” Amelia had been working for her neighbor Ms. Averies for a month already. Her work mostly consisted of weeding flower beds, keeping the flowers watered, as well as trim the bushes and shrubs that lined the sidewalks. Amelia tore her eyes off the mirror and went downstairs, not caring what she looked like. Mom placed bacon, eggs and some buttered toast on the table, and hurried Amelia to eat, since she only had 5 minutes to get over to Ms. Averies. Before long, Amelia was knocking on Ms. Averies‘ door. Dread filled her whole body when she heard footsteps coming to the door. Amelia braced herself for the angry words she was expecting. For the whole month that she had been working for her neighbor, Ms Averies still greeted Amelia with a cold shoulder, and a sour attitude.
Amelia worked through the hot day … weeding, watering, and trimming. Pretty much the usual routine. Secretly, Amelia couldn’ t wait for the summer to be over so she wouldn’ t have to work for Ms. Averies anymore. As the day came to an end, Amelia placed her tools back in the shed and set out to find Ms. Averies. It was Friday and Ms. Averies generally paid Amelia on Fridays. After receiving her pay, Amelia walked home.
