The Charbonneau Villager
A Tribute to Veterans & This Veteran's Mother
My mother, Nellie Wilcox,

of 93. One of the wonderful things

November is a time for remembering and celebrating our
nation’s veterans. As you know,
November 11 is Veterans Day. On
that day we give thanks to those
who have served in our country’s
armed forces: the Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
We have more than 150 veterans
living in Charbonneau. This is an
inspiring statistic to me.
she never gets any credit for. I
would like to change that now,
in this small way. At the place
where she lives, the staff pins a
star-shaped sign next to the apartment door for those who qualify
as a ‘Veteran’ or as a ‘Spouse of a
Veteran.’ My mom has the latter
sign outside her door, because my
dad served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

One day as I was visiting her,
I suggested to her that her sign
should read “Spouse of a Veteran, Mother of Two Veterans,
Grandmother of Two Veterans
and Great-Grandmother of an
Active Duty member of the U.S.
Navy.” All of us have been sailors, with the exception of the
grand-daughter who served in the
U.S. Air Force. (There is always
a Black Sheep.) I may not succeed in getting this sign placed on
her door, but I would like to take
this opportunity to congratulate
my mom!
I hope you were able to attend our Annual Meeting, which
was held on October 12. It was
the last of our scheduled golf outings for 2013. At the meeting, we
elected new board members for
2014. Because I am writing this
before the meeting actually takes
place, I can’t mention the names
of the new board members. But,
I can say goodbye to those board
members whose terms have expired.
