Page 20 February 2014 The Charbonneau Villager Upcoming Rotary Events February is World Understanding month at Rotary, and our main project is raising funds to eradicate polio around the world. Today, there are only three countries where polio remains endemic - Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. However, polio can still travel and often does. There were outbreaks in various African countries in 2013, including Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. Infected people travel, and those who have not been immunized become infected. Last year, visitors to our summer concert series donated over $6,000 to eradicate polio. Combined with matching grant monies from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, those funds were tripled. That provided vaccine for 30,000 at-risk people. Thank you for your support, but the fight continues. We are also preparing for our annual Heart of Gold dinner/ fundraiser which takes place on March 15 at the Holiday Inn. A part of this wonderful evening is honoring Wilsonville’s First Citizen. This a person or persons who will be recognized for outstanding volunteer work in Wilsonville. If you know a deserving volunteer, visit our we bsite and submit your nomination. Lunch Meetings Our lunch meetings take place every Thursday starting at noon at the Al Kader Shrine Center in Wilsonville. Come join us to hear our speakers and learn about Rotary in Wilsonville. Community Center News for February City of Wilsonville Community Center Patty Brescia Community Center Gets New Convection Oven Community Center staff and participants would like to thank the employees of Xerox and a private donor in Wilsonville for making the purchase of a new convection oven possible. The oven was one of the only items not replaced during last year’s building renovation, and staff realized recently that the original one was not operating efficiently. The previous oven had been purchased secondhand when the building was built in 1984. The new oven will allow for quicker meal preparation and reduced use of energy. A group of Xerox employees presented the donation check to Mayor Knapp at the January 6 City Council meeting - in addition to a donation to the Library Foundation and the Parks and Recreation Department’s Movies in the Park program. According to Dick Spence, the Xerox Community Involvement Program, based in Rochester, NY, has donated to a variety of Cityfunded efforts and non-profit organizations in Wilsonville since 2004. In addition to providing donations, Xerox employees volunteer their time onsite as part of the program. Their employees have participated in: clean-up efforts at Engelman Park, serving lunches at the senior nutrition program and making popcorn at Movies in the Park. Stability Ball Class Instructor Jules Moody brings a new class to the Center that will help improve posture, balance, core stability and strength.
