The Charbonneau Villager Page 11 February 2014 Friday Night Bridge Charbonneau Book Club Our first book to discuss in February was described by one reviewer as “a Valentine gift for the one you love.” Evan Connell wrote his first novel, Mrs. Bridge, and then followed with Mr. Bridge. Hollywood combined the two books into a movie, Mr. & Mrs. Bridge, starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. A young woman marries a young lawyer. Life in Kansas City suburbia during the 60s for this family is largely a matter of appearances. Mr. Bridge is a strait-laced workaholic; and Mrs. Bridge raises their three boys and attends the bridge club, social affairs, etc. Early in her marriage, she becomes aware that love isn’t exactly what she had imagined it to be. Mr. Bridge is unable to express his feelings and Mrs. Bridge is a lonely, confused housewife trapped in a life of leisure, cleanliness, politeness and pleasantness. Communication is missing, and their happiness is in danger. This does not sound like romance, but I have been assured that this is a love story. The author, Evan Connell, never married, never had children and was never rewarded financially for his novels. He lived a quiet life doing odd jobs and died at 88 in a nursing home. I am looking forward to our discussion on Tuesday, February 11. Our next book for February 25 is the memoir My Beloved World, by Sonia Sotomayor, our first Hispanic Supreme Court justice. In her book she describes her life growing up in the Bronx projects with the support of her paternal grandmother. She is a determined student, graduates with honors from Yale, goes to law school and becomes a federal judge at 40. Along the way, she has a failed marriage and is diagnosed with diabetes. She is warm and honest and credits her valued mentors and belief in herself for her success. This sounds like an inspirational and uplifting read. Please join us on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm. Our group enjoys the give and take of ideas while we drink our coffee and tea and eat cookies provided by SpringRidge. Please check with the information desk for our location as we don’t always meet in the same room. If you have any questions, feel free to call or e-mail me at 503-6945651 or dotsmyname@comcast. net.
