Biggest Disappointment: ROGER FEDERER

It was a bad French Open campaign for Roger Federer, after he was knocked out in the third round by Gulbis. Federer had looked in good form all year, with solid performances in the Australian Open, Dubai, and Indian Wells. However his clay season, which was interrupted by the birth of his twin sons, has been disappointing.

However with the grass and hard court season on the way, the former world number one will look to put this poor French Open display out of his mind and concentrate on the future.

Most Promising Player: ERNESTS GULBIS

It was also a brilliant week for Ernests Gulbis, as the Latvian finally began to show the world the talent he has with a run to the semi-finals. On the way to the semi-finals Gulbis knocked out Federer in a 5 set thriller, and was clinical as he dispatched Tomas Berdych in 3 sets.

Gulbis's run eventually came to an end against Novak Djokovic in 4 sets, but for brief periods in the 3rd and 4th set the Latvian showed signs he could compete with the Serb. Gulbis has a huge serve, and a very strong backhand. His forehand, which has a rather agricultural take-back and follow through may not be technically sound, but can generate a lot of power. One to watch for during the coming years.

Best Match: Raonic bt Simon in 5 sets

There were many excellent matches during the week, but the best match in my eyes was home favourite Giles Simon up against the Canadian Milos Raonic. Giles Simon has a very solid baseline game and is an excellent mover, while Milos Raonic possesses a huge serve and a massive forehand. The Parisian crowd were fully behind the Frenchman Simon, and were as loud and vociferous as ever in a match that twisted and turned. Eventually it was Milos Raonic who prevailed, winning 7-5 in a nailbiting 5th set.
