Arlington & Lakeland’s Community Newspaper theview .com October 2018 Local Elementary Schools Earn State and National Recognition By Terry Bondurant, Editorial Director U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos this week recognized Lakeland and Donelson Elementary Schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2018. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. According to the US Department of Education, the coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where Meet Your Lakeland Candidates By Terry Bondurant, Editorial Director With the Tennessee state and Federal Elections in November, Lakeland residents will also have several municipal elections on the ballot, including the mayor, commissioners, and school board representatives. Lakeland residents will be voting for two commissioners and three school board members. Commissioners and school board members do not hold specific positions, but the top candidates with the most votes will be elected to serve four-year terms. At The View 38002, we believe that educating the public on the election and candidates helps individuals make informed decisions. While there certainly are many issues that are not touched upon in these questions, we encourage our readers to contact the candidates for more information on their platforms and campaigns. Now in its 36th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has recognized 349 in 2018 schools for their achievement and commitment to education. On November 7-8, representatives from Lakeland and Donelson Elementary Schools will travel to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony with other honorees. As Exemplary High Performing Schools, Lakeland and Donelson Elementaries are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Only six Tennessee schools were selected this as 2018 National Blue Ribbon Schools These honors come just weeks after Arlington Elementary School, Donelson Elementary School, and Lakeland Elementary School were named 2018 Tennessee Reward Schools by the state Department of Education. Reward schools are those that are improving in terms of achievement and growth for both all students and student groups. Arlington Community Schools, Lakeland School System, and Shelby County Schools were also recognized on the district level as “Advancing”. Arlington Community Theatre Stages The Crucible in Historic Cemetery Photo Courtesy of ACT Arlington resident Alexa Thomas and Eric Shultz rehearse for the Arlington Community Theatre production of The Crucible Arlington Community Theatre (ACT), will present the American classic, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller Oct. 12-14 and 19-21. Drawing on the culture of fear that surrounded the villagers of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, The Crucible explores the effects of paranoia and the destruction of innocence caused by the rabid accusations of witchcraft spurned by Mistress Abigail Williams. Adding to the ambiance, this unique interpretation of an American tale of fear, suspicion, and religious extremism will be presented at the Holy Innocents Cemetery, an 1880’s Episcopalian Church and cemetery in Arlington.
