Arlington & Lakeland’s Community Newspaper theview .com October 2017 New Faces Take Office on Arlington Town, School Boards By Terry Bondurant With three unopposed races, there weren’t a lot of surprises when the final vote tally for the September Municipal Elections was released, but four of the seven positions have newly elected officials. As expected, unopposed can- didates Cheryl Pardue (Alderman Position 2), Scott Benjamin (School Board Posi- tion 1), and Dale Viox (School Board Position 5) each won their races. While Viox has been a member of the Arlington Com- munity School Board since its inception, Pardue and Benjamin are newcomers to their respec- tive boards. Pardue cited her past involve- ment with community organiza- tions as an inspiration for her service. “After spending many years observing the function of our town it is an honor to be in a position to help make the deci- sions that affect the growth of Arlington,” Pardue said. “I hope to help achieve bal- ance on the board and maintain the character of our special town.” Incumbents Oscar Brooks Sr. and Harry McKee successfully fought off challenges from Tom- my Reyes and Mark Strausser. Lastly, I want to be a partner with our school board and school Super- intendent on maximizing our educational and extra-curricular opportunities for our students.” The only contested race for the ACS Board was between Jill Yelland and former vice-mayor Hugh Lamar, who was appoint- ed to the Board of Aldermen in 2016 to fill the unexpired term of Gerald McGee.
