The sound of hammering rings through the air; every week a new crop of traffic cones pops up; model home showings and grand openings dot the calendar. In fact, according to Arlington Mayor Mike Wissman, 35 new home permits had been pulled in the town from the start of the year through the end of May. That figure is on pace, Wissman adds, with last year, which was the highest total for Arlington since 2008. Added to the residential construction are a number of new commercial projects and new businesses filling existing retail centers. Already open are Ortho One, Little Caesars, Sen Sushi Bar, Arlington Climate Controlled Storage—all on Airline Road— a UPS Store, and Crave Sweets, both located on Highway 70. Slated to open this summer are Red Med Urgent Care and Lapel’s Cleaners. Olympic Steak & Pizza is currently construction a 7000+ square foot sit-down restaurant on Airline Road at Will Harris Street. Local eatery Brendalay is being rebuilt after a 2017 fire demolished the structure and anticipates a winter opening. Even the Arlington Community School system is part of the building boom with the construction of a new gymnasium to be completed this fall at Arlington Middle School that will double the capacity of the current facility.
