Used with permission of Holland Studios Local Athletes tackled the “Murph” in honor of Memorial Day By Ty Babb, Special to THE VIEW 38002 Every year on Memorial Day, Americans all over the world honor those who have fallen serving the United States Armed Forces in many different ways. This past Memorial Day, over 50 people of all ages gathered to complete “Murph” at ATown CrossFit in Arlington to honor Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy who was killed on June 28th, 2005 while leading a team of Navy Seals on a mission in Afghanistan. Their incredible story was portrayed in the movie “Lone Survivor.” Murph was previously known as “Body Armor.” It was renamed in honor of Murphy and is traditionally performed at CrossFit gyms around the USA every Memorial Day. The workout consists of a 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 pushups, 300 squats and ends with another 1 mile run while wearing an optional 20 lb weighted vest or body armor. While this workout is meant to be challenging, AHS Grad Receives Army Commission George Erwin of Eads, a 2012 Arlington High Graduate, was awarded a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army upon his graduation on May 14, 2016 from the University of Mississippi. Erwin will be training as an Armor officer at Fort Benning Georgia, and then taking a position as a platoon leader in the Mississippi Army National Guard. Erwin is pictured above, left with Brady Bramlett (right), also a class of 2012 Arlington graduate and Ole Miss baseball player, who performed the National Anthem at the ceremony. Photo courtesy of Erwin family. Photo by Kelly Babb it can be scaled to anyone’s level of fitness by doing their own version of Murph, which includes scaling the run, reps, movements, or even partitioning the workout as a team. For the last three years, A-Town CrossFit has hosted the event for members as well as non-members in the community who want to push themselves and dedicate a bit of pain and sweat to honor veterans. Murph is more than just a workout; it has been turned into a tradition. Some Arlington Students who accepted the challenge of the “Murph” included (L to R): Elizabeth Wagner (Arlington High School), Abby Grantham, Taylor Babb (Arlington High School) and Kate Sander (Arlington Middle School)
