Independence Day
Celebration
Saturday, July 4, 9:30am
-Noon, at Hughes-College
Hill Park (on Chester
Street) with Children’s
Parade at 10:00 a.m. and
In the 1920s, arrowheads could be found,
especially after a rain, in
freshly ploughed fields
near the Loosahatchie
River between the river
and the current Highway
70 at Arlington. These
arrowheads were most
likely made by Chickasaw Indians. Years of
ploughing eventually
leveled the “hills” that
were in the area and in
the fields. On display at
the Rachel H. K. Burrow
Museum are arrowheads
from a small hill with
buckeye trees locally
known, at the time collected, as Buckeye Knoll.
These arrowheads were
collected by Dr. Willard
James Harrell, a local
dentist who at one time
had his dental office in
his family’s home, the
Bone House. Dr.
Harrell’s father (William
Jacob Harrell II) purchased the Bone House
in 1921 and moved his
family from the Harrell
Farm into Arlington.
