Arlington & Lakeland’s Community Newspaper theview .com August 2018 Lakeland, Arlington Students Continue to Lead State in TNReady Test Results By Terry Bondurant, Editorial Director Tennessee Commissioner of Education Candice McQueen announced the 2018 TNReady student assessment results on July 19, sharing that while results vary statewide, there are encouraging trends – including strong growth in English language arts for ele- mentary grades. “We see reason to be encour- aged, but we also have a lot of work to do to meet our higher expectations for all students,” Commissioner McQueen said. “While we’ve focused extensive- ly on early grades reading and are starting to see a shift in the right direction, we know middle school remains a statewide challenge across the board. TNReady serves as a vital feedback loop for teachers, parents, and administra- tors to tell us where we are, and the results inform what steps we need to take to help all students and schools succeed. We are committed to improving imple- mentation of TNReady so that parents, educators, and the de- partment can continue to know how our students are doing each year.” ARLINGTON WAS ONE OF ONLY SIX DIS- TRICTS STATEWIDE THAT SCORED IN BOTH THE TOP FIVE FOR GROWTH AND THE TOP FIVE FOR OVERALL ACHIEVE- MENT LEVEL FOR A PARTICULAR SUBJECT OR GRADE BAND. The recent test results show that Arlington Community Schools continues to rank among the best in the state for achieve- ment and growth. Overall, ACS ranked in the top 5 statewide in the following subject areas: 3-5 English Lan- guage Arts, 3-5 Math, 5-8 Sci- ence, and 9-12 US History; and in the top 10 for 6-8 English Lan- guage Arts. “We should be proud of our students and teachers for the work they put forth in the 2017- 2018 school year,” said Arlington Community Schools Superinten- dent Tammy Mason. “We contin- ue to compete with the best of the best in the state and region, and we should celebrate those achievements. I look forward to working with our educators this upcoming school year to make sure we’re improving in all cate- gories.” LAKELAND SCHOOL SYSTEM ACHIEVES HIGHEST DISTRICT SCORES IN BOTH MATH AND READING/ LANGUAGE ARTS For the third year in a row in which scores were available, Lakeland School System’s dis- trict- wide TNReady achievement scores in grades 3-5 rank number one in the state in both Math and Reading/Language Arts. For the first time, these scores captured results from two schools, Lake- land Elementary School (K-4) and Lakeland Middle Preparatory School (5-8) which opened in August of 2017 and just complet- ed its first year of operation. Lakeland Middle Preparatory School 5th graders were among only 15% of 5th graders statewide who completed their assessments online during a test- ing period that included disrup- tions to testing nearly every day of the test administration due to technological issues with the statewide testing platform. Lake- land 6th through 8th graders were also among 30% of students in that grade band that took their TNReady assessments online and experienced the same repeated interruptions to their testing due to technical issues. According to the Tennessee Department of Education, the majority of the 650,000 students who took TNReady this year did so on paper, but about 300,000 students took TNReady online.
