“What do you want and why are you here?”

She rolled her eyes and replied, “I’m here to get you idiot.”

“Why me?”

“Because you’re the person I got assigned too.”

“How did you get in?”

“How do you think the Demidemons get in?”

“I don’t know!”“There’s a tunnel leading to the surface, I can’t believe nobody’s

found it yet. Listen, I know you have a lot of questions. I understand but we have to go before they find us.”

“Before they find you that is, and I’m not going anywhere with a Demon until you

tell me exactly what’s going on.” She sighed, clearly exasperated with me, but she didn’t try to convince me more.

“Fine. If you want more information, meet me tonight at 9:00 at this spot. I’ll explain

everything then.”

“Fine. You better have answers Demon or else I’m turning you in.” She glared at me

and for a second I thought she’d slug me but she just swiftly turned and sprinted away. I started to walk back home, my mind a turmoil of thoughts. Why didn’t she look like a Demon? They were supposed to be hideous beasts but she looked normal. Pretty even. The only thing unusual about her was her red hair. There’s few redheads nowadays.

When I got home my mom asked me, “Are you okay?”“Yeah, just had to clear up my mind.”

My dad entered the living room and boomed, “Well you did a great job today, they chose your pair well.”

I tried to sound happy when I replied, “Thanks dad,” but it just sounded flat. All I could think about was Sierra and the mysterious meeting at 9:00.

After dinner, it was nearly 9 and I told my mom I was going for another walk and for her and dad to not wait up.

“Okay, but don’t come back too late okay?”

“I won’t,” I replied, and I left quickly before she could’ve said anything else. By the

time I got there, it was five past nine and Sierra was already there waiting for me. “You have questions,” she said bluntly, “go on.”

“How are you a Demon? You look human.”

“I am a human, your government lied about us. We live above ground and we are

perfectly normal. Not the evil, cruel, so called ‘Demons’ that your society portrays us as.”

“But the nuclear war!”

“Yes, that did happen, I’ll give you that, but you’re not the only ones who hid. My

ancestors hid us away in pods and we came out when it was safe. We sent out bots to make the area habitable again and now we can grow food and have fresh water.”

“What about Demidemons? Are they real?”

“They are real, but not the way your people described them. Remember everything

they said about Demons?” I nodded, too stunned to speak.
