The Murders in

the Night

By Bridget X.

The mid-morning light filtered through the stained-glass windows as Sam hurried through the castle’s majestic hallways. Servants crowded the hall, all busy, for the Queen of Astoria, the neighboring country, had arrived for a visit. Most of the important nobles were all in the Great Hall, where a meeting was being held.

Sam, who usually worked in the kitchens, had been called upstairs to fetch Lord Bryan, who had still not arrived. It was assumed that he was still asleep, so Sam headed up to the great oak door that led to Lord Bryan’s personal chambers. Strangely, the door was already slightly open.

Knocking three times, Sam pressed his ear to the door. There was no sound. He pushed open the door and walked up to Lord Bryan’s sleeping figure, curled to the side and facing the wall opposite of the door, preparing to shake him awake. As he drew closer, he frowned. Why wasn’t Lord Bryan moving at all? He didn’t even seem to be breathing...

Finally reaching him, Sam got a good look and saw the slit on Lord Bryan’s throat, blood still trickling out. Stumbling back so fast he fell, he screamed at the top of his lungs for the guards.
