The It List

What's in:

Getting a major chop- If you’re looking for a big change for your hair, try going in the natural direction. Go for a short new cut (à la Jennifer Lawrence) instead of dying your hair a bright neon. The color will hide your natural beauty, while the cut will enhance it.

French manicure- A timeless style is still staying elegant while it morphs into a more modern design. New variations keep popping up, like glitter, a dual French tip, and endless color combos. Also, since it’s a classic, it never goes out of style.

Scented candles- These play double duty. They not only make a room smell as fresh as a daisy, they look chic while doing it. They’re more functional than air freshener because that can does not double as decoration.

Survivor’s 28th season- The longest-running reality competition series is still going strong after almost 14 years. The show is kept fresh by new twists for various seasons, like Fans vs. Favorites, Heroes vs. Villains, Blood vs. Water, or, the latest take, Brains vs. Beauty vs. Brawns.

Movie adaptations of novels- Turning bestsellers into films is a no-brainer: the books are popular for a reason, so why not give the fans more of what they want? I’m particularly excited for Divergent, which comes into theaters on March 21, 2014, and The Fault in Our Stars, which comes out on June 6, 2014.

What's out:

Venti frappuchino overload- Starbucks is a nice little pick-me-up, but some of the beverages have a large caloric cost. The simplest solution is to get a smaller size, but that only goes so far. Instead, steer clear of unnecessary add-ons like whipped cream and chocolate in favor of non-fat, low calorie options like the Nonfat Cappuchino, Iced Skinny Latte, or many others. The best option? Plain and classic Brewed Coffee for only 5 calories and no fat.

Living life behind a screen- Yes, it’s fun to post on Instagram and send a Snap, but having healthy social media is like having healthy nutrition: guilty pleasures are best done in moderation. Instead of posting that you’re having an amazing time going bowling with your best friends, live in the moment and enjoy it.

Taking advantage of sales- I love getting great deals on things as much as anyone else, but using sales as an excuse to buy stuff won’t save you money, it will cause you to lose it. Although you probably have heard people tell you to think, “Do I really need this?” before buying something, I’m still going to say it again because it’s the truth. Yes, it’s okay to buy new shoes for the formal if you have none that match your dress, but say no to the sequined skirt that will only collect dust in your closet.
