The King's Heir
As the sun set over the King’s life,
With a twist in his compassionless heart,
A cunning plan took root in his brain
To ensure a powerful heir and marry off his only daughter.
I will bequeath my kingdom to any soul
who can save my daughter from her fate.
And he sent her off in a carriage to be guarded by a dragon as immense as the kingdom itself.
The aspiring kings traveled from the farthest reaches of the land,
Bursting with tales of their glories like fruit full of poison juice.
Each perished at the door of the prison.
A nimbler, cloaked figure approached
And was scorned for their lack in size.
I have come to defeat this dragon
And win the princess in marriage.
A sneer crept across the beast’s face
Ribbons of steam curled from its snout
And sharp claws pierced the soil.
A moment later it lay dead.
Awestruck, the men stood wondering,
Who could have led the dragon to its end?
Princess, I have come to take your hand in marriage.
The figure lowered their hood.
It was a woman who stood there.
