A Winter's Day

Jack jolted awake from a pleasant dream. At least, he vaguely recalled that it was pleasant.

Slipping out of his white, fluffy covers, Jack shivered, and wondered, “Why is it so cold?” He looked over at his window and noticed that it was open.

“Oh no!” he shouted, rushing over to the breach in warmth.

When he reached the window, he noticed that the world outside was completely white.

“Are we going to have a snow day today?” Jack inquired to no one in particular.

Turning around after closing the window, Jack strode over to the stairs. When he walked around the corner and onto the first floor of his house, Jack was suddenly tackled by an unseen assailant.

“Ow!” he groaned. “Bobby, get off of me!”

“Come on now, just having a little fun” his brother replied.

Rubbing his side, Jack pretended to limp over to the kitchen, mostly his pride having been wounded.

“Mom! What are we having for breakfast?” he called.

“Pancakes!” his mom called back.

“Pancakes? Sweet!”

Five minutes later, when his mom had finished cooking, they all sat down at the table. Jack and Bobby both dug into the food voraciously.

“Mom, what are we going to do today?” Bobby asked.

“Well, I was thinking we could go sledding down at the park”.

“Woohoo!”

When they had all finished their food, they put the dishes in the sink and went upstairs to change into their snow gear. As he put his jacket on, Jack looked outside the window into a winter wonderland.

“Wow” he thought.“ Today is really going to be a great winter day”.

Suddenly, everything in the house went black.

“Jack?” his mother called. “I think the snow crushed our power lines, and took out the electricity”.

“Well” Jack thought, “I take back what I said. This is most definitely NOT a great winter day”.
