If you have not seen the Divergent movie, then you are one in a million. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth. It stars Shailene Woodley as Beatrice Prior, and Theo James as Tobias Eaton. Ansel Elgort is featured as Caleb Prior, and Kate Winslet is Jeanine Matthews. Worldwide, the film grossed at a total of $263,118,231 and ranked first in its opening week.

Directed by Neil Burger, this high-action film takes place in a dystopian Chicago. Beatrice Prior finds out that she is ‘Divergent’, and must be very careful around the Erudite leader, Jeanine Matthews. The city is divided into five factions; Abnegation is selfless, Erudite is intelligent, Dauntless is brave, Amity is kind, and Candor is honest. Beatrice fits into three of these factions, but normal people are only supposed to fit into one. Therefore, she is Divergent. She ends up choosing to live in Dauntless, although she also could have chosen Erudite or Abnegation. When she gets there, Beatrice has everyone call her ‘Tris”, because Beatrice is an Abnegation name. Throughout her training, the trainer, Four, helps her tremendously. They end up falling in love, and try to get through the breaking of the faction system together. A mindless army of Dauntless is created using a mind-control serum, but all of the people that are Divergent are still awake. This army is created by the Erudite to attack Abnegation, and the Divergent are hunted down, and Tris and Four are separated. Tris’ mother saves her by sacrificing her own life, and although Four has been come over by a special serum, Tris makes him come to his senses. Together, they trick Jeanine into shutting down the entire operation. Many Abnegation lives were lost, but they were able to stop it in time to save some lives. Jeanine may never be destroyed, but Tris and Four will do their best to make sure that she never does anything like this again.

This movie is the first of the trilogy, and is being succeeded by Insurgent, which is scheduled to come out March 20, 2015. As the saga progresses, the pair must continue to fight the failing faction system as the situation intensifies. Fans cannot wait for the release of Insurgent, and it is bound to be just as successful, if not more, than Divergent was.
