Bishop Daly named Interim Rector/ President of St. Patrick Seminary
By Roberta Ward San Jose Auxiliary Bishop Thomas A. Daly has been named Interim Rector/President of Saint Patrick Seminary and University in Menlo Park, effective immediately Sept. 16 as announced by San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. The archbishop thanked San Jose Bishop Patrick J. McGrath for his willingness to “share” Bishop Daly, who remains Auxiliary of San Jose while assuming this part-time position at the seminary. Archbishop Cordileone noted that Bishop Daly had served for many years as Archdiocesan Vocation Director and President of Marin Catholic High School, and is currently a member of Saint Patrick’s Board of Trustees. Auxiliary Bishop Bishop Daly will continue to serve the Diocese Thomas A. Daly of San Jose in the area of Catholic Education and, in particular, as Vicar for Clergy. Vicar General Msgr. Francis Cilia has agreed to take on the responsibility of Associate Vicar for Clergy (interim). Archbishop Cordileone said that this decision “in no way should be interpreted as an initial move to remove the care of the seminary from the Society of Saint Sulpice. “On the contrary, the title of ‘interim’ rector is meant to convey that this position will remain in place only until a Sulpician candidate for rector can be found who has the proper qualifications, is experienced in administration, and is wellsuited for the continued implementation of the strategic plan for the seminary.” In a memorandum to the Board of Trustees of the seminary, Archbishop Cordileone noted “a number of serious concerns regarding administration matters,” and “the immediate need to address the seminary’s finances and need for an organized and serious development effort. There is need for a new rector to take charge in order to move in the direction of the strategic plan being developed to address these issues.” The archbishop also expressed his gratitude to Father James McKearney, SS, for his service as Rector/President. He will continue to serve in ministry as a member of the Society of Saint Sulpice. “I am grateful to Father McKearney for all the good he has accomplished during his tenure as rector, especially the outstanding faculty he has built up over these last five years,” Archbishop Cordileone said.
